About

I’m Audrey, and I’m a freelance writer, editor, and writing coach.

Born in the Oil Capital of Alabama, Citronelle, I made my way to Birmingham by way of the University of Montevallo, where I earned a B.A. in English. I write stories about growing up and living in the South, confronting our history and stereotypes head-on as I reflect on my own life and values while continuously educating myself and challenging the norm.

I’ve been published in The Washington Post, The Bitter Southerner‘s Folklore Project, Alabama Media Group’s “It’s a Southern Thing,” “Reckon,” and “This Is Alabama,” and Mobile Bay Magazine, among others.

I’ve also published a collection of essays, They Call Me Orange Juice, and you can get your copy here!

Do you aspire to write and want to get started? Are you already a writer looking for accountability and a supportive writing group? Or maybe you understand that creative writing helps improve your professional writing and want to explore how. If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, come learn with me! I teach Creative Writing both privately and through UAB’s ArtPlay. If you are interested in taking a writing class or having me give a workshop for your group or organization, please let me know.

I’m also an accomplished artist who works in watercolor, oils, and pen and ink, and I am an avid crocheter. I make a mean cocktail and an even meaner pot of gumbo. I’ve walked every single day since January 1, 2022 for at least 30 minutes. And I’ve been known to break out into spontaneous dance in public much to my husband’s mortification, but I think he’s used to it now.

I’d be tickled to speak to your group or at your event! I promise we’ll all have a big time. You can get up with me at audrey@audreyatkinswriter.com.

  1. How can I sign up for your blog? I LOVE your book and have given it to many friends and families, who grew up in the Soith. Thank you for putting your stories on paper 🙂

    1. Thank you, Charlotte!! If you go to one of the blog posts, on the right, there should be an option to enter your email to follow the blog. That way, you’ll get an email every time I post something. I’m so happy you liked the book and my little stories!

  2. Hi! Just found this and am very much enjoying. Wanted to let you know I am also a graduate of Montevallo. I love meeting others who know the weirdness of that special little place in the center of Alabama.

  3. Well! I feel cheated that I did not know you before now. Today I received my Mobile Bay Magazine and found you there. I am looking forward to having a new on-line, make-me-feel-good place to escape by just reading.
